Words with Long /i/ and Long /o/

Rule:  The most common spelling for long /i/ in initial or medial position is spelled i-e (bike).  The letter y is used in final position of an  accented syllable or the end  of a one syllable  word (fly, cycle).  Other spellings include i in the open accented syllable (iris), digraph ie (pie), trigraph igh  (light).

Rule:  The most common spelling for long /o/ in initial or medial position is spelled o-e (rope).  Other spellings: the letter o in an open, accented syllable (open), ow is used in final position (snow), oa (boat) and occ in a 1 syllable word when o is followed by 2 consonants (cold).
